What to Wear for an Australian Beach Holiday: A Family Packing Guide

Packing for an Australian beach holiday sounds simple.

Swimmers. Towels. Thongs. Done.

Then you add kids.

Suddenly you're packing for swimming, breakfast, beach walks, fishing, playgrounds, dinners, boat trips and approximately 14 unexpected outfit changes.

The trick is packing pieces that can do more than one job.

Here's our guide to creating an easy family beach holiday wardrobe without taking the entire contents of everyone's bedroom with you.

1. Start With Good Swimwear

This one's obvious.

Pack swimmers everyone is actually comfortable wearing for hours at a time.

For kids, having a second pair can also be worth the luggage space — particularly when yesterday's swimmers are still wet the next morning.

2. Pack Lightweight, Sun-Safe Layers

When you're spending most of the day outside, lightweight clothing with good coverage becomes essential.

Look for long-sleeved pieces with a high UPF rating that can easily be thrown over swimmers.

Our Keepers shirts are ARPANSA-rated UPF50+ and made from lightweight, quick-dry fabric, making them ideal for beach holidays and long days outdoors.

They're also designed to look like a classic shirt rather than traditional sun-protective clothing.

Which becomes particularly handy when your day goes straight from the beach to lunch.

3. Choose Clothes That Work in More Than One Setting

Holiday packing becomes much easier when one outfit can handle multiple plans.

Think:

Beach → lunch

Boat → BBQ

Pool → afternoon drinks

Fishing → dinner

A simple pair of shorts and a lightweight shirt can cover most of them.

For kids, it also means fewer outfit changes — which we're calling a win.

4. Consider Matching Family Outfits

Hear us out.

We're not talking about dressing everyone identically for seven days.

But packing a coordinating family outfit can be a lovely addition to a beach holiday.

Matching father and son shirts, Dad and daughter outfits or coordinating sibling shirts are perfect for one of those long beach days when you know you'll probably end up taking family photos.

Choose simple colours and classic patterns and it feels much more coastal than novelty matching.

5. Don't Forget the Hat

A hat should be one of the first things thrown into the beach bag.

Choose something comfortable enough that the kids will actually keep it on — because the world's best hat isn't particularly useful when it's lying underneath the car seat.

Add sunglasses and sunscreen and you're well on your way.

6. Pack for the Australian Sun

Australian beach holidays mean a lot of time outdoors, so sun protection needs to be part of what you pack rather than an afterthought.

Think sunscreen, shade, hats and clothing that provides good coverage.

UPF50+ clothing can be particularly useful for long days outside because the protection is built into what everyone is already wearing.

The Keepers Beach Holiday Uniform

Our approach to holiday packing is pretty simple:

Swimmers underneath. Keepers shirt over the top. Shorts. Hat. Done.

It's an outfit that can take the family from an early morning swim to the boat, the beach, fish and chips and wherever the afternoon ends up.

Designed in Queensland for Australian families, The Keepers Club creates premium UPF50+ beach and outdoor clothing for adults and kids.

Sun-safe enough for a day outside.

Polished enough for lunch.

And even better when the family matches.
